John Anthony DeBerniere papers, 1794-1800.

Papers consist of a commission (December 1794) authorizing Lt. Colonel John DeBerniere to raise a "Corps of Foot;" an account (1795-1798) for expenses involved in raising and maintaining the unit; a formula (n.d) for a remedy for a "greased horse;" and two letters. Letters (1800, n.d.) from John Anthony DeBerniere include one to his daughter Louisa Lane regarding her husband's losses in trade and other matters; and a letter to Robert Lane in New York concerning some land under consideration for purchase and other matters. One letter is addressed from the Grange, Deep River.

Born in Ireland, John Anthony DeBerniere became an officer in the British army. He married Anne Jones (d. 1821), who gave birth to twelve or thirteen children, including Louisa DeBerniere (1779-1846), who married Robert Lane in Fayetteville, N.C. in 1799. In that same year John A. DeBerniere had moved his family to America, first settling in Fayetteville, N.C. He later moved to a plantation called the Grange, near Deep River, in North Carolina.
